Pop artists have been making art for decades, but the lack of truthfulness is apparent in modern day music. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Substance should be more common in pop stardom

The pop genre has dominated the music industry for many years now, but a soulful and vulnerable pop-star is a diamond that has become all too rare in 2025. With the ongoing stream of interviews and live performances, it's hard to tell whether a star is creating from a place of artistic substance or simply putting on a facade for views and attention.

Drag queens who compete on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” know what to expect when entering the Werk Room, so they should prepare for it. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Drag queens should be more prepared for ‘RuPaul's Drag Race’

For 17 seasons, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has been paving the way for LGBTQ+ representation on television. By advocating for trans rights and raising money for charity, “Drag Race” allows the unseen to be showcased. RuPaul has created a show that blends competition, charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to give queens the chance to become America's next drag superstar.  Unfortunately, some queens have what it takes, while others do not.

Giving students the option to tip at Traditions could be a win-win for themselves and for workers in the process. (Photo by Andre Paras / Video Editor)

OPINION: Students should be able to tip at Traditions

With the end of the spring semester rapidly approaching, I’m facing a big issue when it comes to dining here at the College, and I’m sure a number of fellow students are also going through the same. I simply have too many flex points to spend, with such little time to do so. As a freshman, I’m currently on the 10 swipes a week at Eickhoff Dining Hall meal plan, which means I started this semester with exactly $534.71 in flex points. And of course, I would not like any of my family’s hard earned cash to go to waste when the semester ends.

There are many places to get fries on campus. (Photo courtesy of Shane Gillespie)

OPINION: There is a best fries spot on campus

I love a good food debate, and the College has no shortage of dining options, whether it’s Eickhoff hall, Blazin’ J’s or my favorite late night option, T-Dubs. There’s something for everyone. Many of these places have french fries, and with so many options to choose from, which one is the best? I have decided to give my two cents.

The rhetoric that Americans must exclusively speak English is a prevalent one. (Illustration by Sky Stewart)

OPINION: The US should not have an official language

The White House expressed that this executive order is symbolic to the nation’s founding documents, and therefore American culture. It also indicated that the action will promote unity and assimilation with new Americans.  I’d argue it does the complete opposite. This executive order is quite intentional with its wording — making it just contradictory enough that you may have missed the real meaning behind it.

Nail art has been a part of pop culture for years and is one of the best ways to tell the world exactly who you are and what you love. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Nails are one of the best ways to express yourself

From French tips to XXL stiletto tips, nails have been a prominent symbol of beauty since ancient dynasties. The first known examples of nail polish date back to 3,000 BC in ancient China. However, in modern times, there is no limit to what you can do with your nails, and I believe that they are one of the best ways to express yourself. What I think one must remember when considering nail art is the type of feelings colors evoke in others when they see it. Red implies confidence, seduction and power. On the other hand, yellow can suggest happiness, youth and joy.

As Ariana Grande progresses in her career, so do her shoe choices — transitioning thigh-high stilettos during her pop stardom to Jimmy Choo heels that encapsulate her Hollywood glamour. (Photo courtesy of IMDb)

OPINION: Ariana Grande’s shoes brought her home, in more ways than one

One woman who has truly proven to be that witch is Ariana Grande. From dominating the pop industry to now soaring over Munchkinland in a bubble, she has shown that her career is a force to be reckoned with. We all remember the height of her pop era — marked by thigh-high boots and ultra-high stilettos — but lately, our pop diva-turned-good-witch has been spotted in nothing but the classiest pairs of Jimmy Choos.

The College’s Honors and Scholars Programs needs more diverse course offerings. (Photo by Andre Paras / Staff Photographer)

OPINION: Honors course offerings are getting worse

The College’s Honors and Scholars Program recently announced its fall 2025 course offerings, giving students a list of what classes they are eligible to enroll in to fulfill one of the five honors courses needed to complete the program requirements.  Since my first semester back in fall 2021, I was never impressed with the courses that the honors program offered. I always found most of them to be related to topics that I was not interested in.

The Met Gala usually yields some lackluster results despite how easy its themes are to follow.  (Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons / Hugo Schneider , Sept. 9, 2019)

OPINION: It is not that hard to follow the Met Gala theme

With the recent announcement of the 2025 Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” I felt it was important that we discuss the consistent predicament of guests missing the theme completely.  One would expect that guests of a dinner party thrown by one of the biggest fashion publications in the world would follow the provided theme. Unfortunately, for many guests that is simply not the case.

Some fashion trends are more timeless than others. (Photo courtesy of Flickr,“Clothes” by Jusotil_1943, April 19, 2018)

OPINION: Tacky fashion is out, timeless is in

As we enter the spring of 2025, we are bound to see an influx of fashion trends within the land of social media. However, transitioning into this new fashion season also means that we must remind ourselves that in order for one trend to rise, another must fall. Trends are all fun and games in the moment, but looking back at your Instagram years from now will show you that timeless fashion is always the way to go.

Social Media should have more user-controlled content moderation. (Photo courtesy of Flickr,“Girl Checking her Instagram” by Themeisle, Feb 2, 2019)

OPINION: Social media has a rage bait epidemic

Rage bait, posts designed to anger a user with intentionally negative opinions, is common on all social media platforms. It’s a fixture of the algorithm no matter what, as engagement farming is inherently the point from a creator’s perspective. I don’t mind those kinds of posts usually, and I tend to scroll past whatever insane take that graces my screen.  That was until recently when I made the apparently fatal mistake of lingering on one such post.
