Fifth National Climate Assessment gives insight into climate change impacts U.S. faces

The United States government released its Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5) on Nov. 14, which details how the U.S. is currently addressing and being impacted by the climate crisis. The report describes the current and future risks the nation faces, how global greenhouse gas emissions are leading to rising temperatures and what actions are needed to be taken to mitigate the future impacts of climate change.

Supreme Court likely to uphold gun protection law despite Conservative majority

On Nov. 14, the Supreme Court is expected to reevaluate and discuss U.S. v. Rahimi, a domestic violence case that has the potential to renew the precedent on future gun control laws, as ABC News reports. This case will be the first gun rights case the Supreme Court will be ruling on since last year’s New York Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen decision, where the Court ruled conservatively.

Pakistan orders mass expulsion of thousands of Afghans

Hundreds of thousands of Afghans are being forced to leave Pakistan as the country implements a nationwide crackdown on all undocumented or unregistered foreigners. The new order requires all people without legal documents to leave the country, though it primarily affects some 1.7 million Afghans living in Pakistan without documentation.

2023 expected to be the hottest year on record

The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service announced that this October was the warmest in global recorded history, with the average surface air temperature being 0.85ºC higher than that from the past 30 years. While the change may not seem significant, global average temperatures have risen by 1.43ºC above pre-industrial temperatures, an increase dangerously close to the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global temperatures to 1.5ºC. If this benchmark is surpassed, the United Nations predicts increasingly severe climate impacts.

Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib censured on charges of anti-semitism

In a seldom issued measure of rebuke, the U.S. House voted on Nov. 7 to censure Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib for her remarks on the ongoing Israel-Palestine war, as per Reuters. The disciplining of Tlaib, the lone Palestinian-American in Congress, comes at a time when fissures are forming amongst both the Democratic Party and American public on the government’s unwavering support of Israel.

New polls reveal close race between Trump and Biden

With the 2024 presidential election a year away, new polls are predicting who may win in the upcoming election. Although polls may not be the best at foreseeing election results, as demonstrated by the 2016 presidential election, these new predictions are raising alarms for both Democrats and Republicans.

Teachers strike in Portland commences due to lack of resources

For years, there have been disputes over fair pay and benefits for teachers around the world. However, in the town of Portland, Oregon, this has recently resulted in a strike, closing public schools. The strike was due to large class sizes, low salaries and a lack of resources according to AP News. Sarah Trapido, a special education teacher at Kellogg Middle School, is one of the teachers going on strike. She commented on the reasoning behind it as a whole.

Trump family testifies in Trump Organization civil trial

Last week, the Trump family began their testimony in the Trump Organization’s civil trial with Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump’s testimony in New York. The trial, following the company’s fraud allegations, began last month and asserts that the two sons, Donald Trump himself and other associates of the company falsely inflated company real estate assets in order to increase the company’s net worth.

November 2023 Elections Results

On Nov. 7, the United States held key elections for political offices and judicial courts in multiple states, including New Jersey, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia. The election was a significant indicator of policy changes, including those related to abortion and education, within each respective state.

Contest of the opposition primary spells trouble for 2024 presidential elections in Venezuela

As Venezuela gears up for a landmark presidential election in 2024, the country’s path towards a legitimate democracy remains hindered by ploys on the part of the government in power. A primary contest to decide on a candidate to run against current President Nicolas Maduro in next year’s elections was held on Oct. 23, with opposition leader Marina Corina Machado winning 93% of the vote out of a record 2.4 million ballots, according to reporting by the New York Times.

Flint water crisis case ends with no charges

The Michigan Supreme Court decided to decline to hear appeals from a lower court, meaning state prosecutors can no longer pursue criminal cases against former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and other officials for their roles in the Flint water crisis, where a 2014 switch of the city’s drinking water source led to contamination and widespread health concerns.

Japan vs. North Korea: Human Rights Scandal

On Oct. 30, a high court in Japan asserted that the North Korean government holds responsibility for human rights violations. As reported by the plaintiffs, many people were attracted to the promises of North Korea from 1959 to 1984, mainly due to the promise of free healthcare, jobs, benefits and education. However, upon arriving in North Korea, none of those promises were ever fulfilled.

Xí Jìnpíng, Gavin Newsom meet to discuss the future of the climate crisis

Unexpectedly, the California Gov. Gavin Newsom visited China’s president, Xí Jìnpíng to discuss climate change action on Oct. 25. Newsom also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice President Han Zheng. Newsom intrigued Chinese officials as they discussed opportunities to deliver climate crisis action mostly due to California’s robust economic market. The U.S.–China trade system benefits from California’s unique multi-billion dollar economic ties to China by trading high technological innovations and goods; Newsom used this relationship to bolster a stronger and more immediate collaborative effort to combat the climate crisis.

County in Texas bans helping women travel to get an abortion

Lubbock, Texas, a county close to the New Mexico border, has passed an ordinance banning people from assisting women to travel to get an abortion, despite abortion being legal within the county itself. This new “travel ban” serves as another attempt from conservatives to further restrict abortion access and female autonomy since the fall of Roe v. Wade.

U.N. Chief under scrutiny after remarks condemning Israeli offensives in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has come under fire in recent days after statements made at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in New York last Tuesday. In a speech to the council, he issued a condemnation of Hamas’s attacks on the Israel border on Oct. 7, which left more than 1,400 dead and 222 taken as hostages, the majority of them civilians, in estimates made by Reuters. His statement also included a rebuke of Israel’s retaliatory measures in the days since the initial attacks, expressing concerns regarding the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
