Hurricane Helene causes catastrophic damage in southeastern U.S.

Hurricane Helene brought life-threatening flooding to parts of the southeastern United States on Sep. 27, killing hundreds of people and leaving many more missing. The high winds, storm surge and torrential rain made Helene the deadliest hurricane to make landfall on the mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to The Associated Press.

Trump undeterred after second apparent assassination attempt

Just two months after former President Donald Trump survived an attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he sustained a bullet wound to his upper right ear, the Republican presidential nominee was almost the target of another attempt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sep. 15, as reported by the BBC.

NJ State Police restructures amid investigative findings of discrimination

New Jersey State Police underwent departmental restructuring on Sept. 24 in light of reports of gender and racial discrimination and biases within the agency’s hiring processes. N.J. Attorney General Matt Platkin has taken control of the N.J. State Police human resources department as well as its equal employment division in an effort to combat several findings of unfair and biased practices.

Meet the New Jersey Senate and House of Representative candidates

The 2024 United States Senate and House of Representatives elections are scheduled for Nov. 5. Out of the 100 seats in the Senate, 34 are open, and one seat is open for special election. Across the U.S., Democrats hold 19 seats while Republicans hold 10 and four seats are held by independents, according to Ballotpedia. Six candidates are seeking New Jersey’s vacant Senate seat, while 24 candidates seek a spot in all 12 House seats.

During the Sep. 10 presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, while discussing immigration, Trump said, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating, they’re eating, the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in this country.” 67 Million Americans watched as Trump made this unexpected remark, launching the town of Springfield, Ohio, into the national spotlight.

Speaker Johnson delays vote on government funding bill amid opposition

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson has delayed a vote on a temporary government funding bill amid opposition from members of his own party, according to The Associated Press. The measure would have kept federal agencies and programs operating through March 28 and averted a partial government shutdown just weeks before the presidential election.

Brazil bans X after judge feuds with Elon Musk

On Aug. 30, the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, suspended X, formerly Twitter, amid an ongoing feud with Elon Musk. The ban comes after numerous concerns over misinformation and exploitation of democratic integrity on X. The ban became official after X failed to appoint a new legal representative before the court-mandated deadline.

Four killed and nine wounded in Georgia school shooting

Four people – two 14-year-old students and two teachers – were killed and nine others were hospitalized in a mass shooting at Apalachee High in Winder, Georgia on Sept. 4. The suspect, 14-year-old student Colt Gray, has been charged with four counts of murder. The shooting is at least the 45th school shooting in 2024 and the deadliest this year, according to a CNN analysis.
