The search for the new Speaker of the House ended after three long weeks. On Oct. 25, House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) to become the new Speaker. In the days since Kevin McCarthy was voted out of the Speakers office, House Republicans made slow progress in the search for a new Speaker. According to the New York Times, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) lost a secret vote on Oct. 20 to remain as the G.O.P. nominee for Speaker.

Biden visits Israel after hospital blast in Gaza

President Joe Biden arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel on Wednesday to reaffirm the United States' solidarity with Israel in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. The high-stakes visit was meant to bolster Israel’s fight against Hamas and negotiate agreements over providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, according to CNN.

Vladimir Putin shows support for China’s Xi Jinping in visit to Beijing

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited China on Oct. 17 in a show of support for the nation’s leader Xi Jinping’s efforts to expand its economy and influence overseas, reported AP News. Xi welcomed a number of representatives, including Putin, to the Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing. The Belt and Road Forum is a showcase of the Chinese leader’s initiative to build new infrastructure and expand the nation’s diplomatic global influence.

29 dead in Burmese displacement camp in military targeting of rebel groups

The people of Myanmar have been routinely subject to abuses and bombardment by their own government, in the two years since a military coup replaced democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her National League for Democracy party. AP News reports that an airstrike conducted by the Myanmar military killed 29 people in a displaced persons camp on Oct. 10, among them about a dozen children. Targeted was the Mung Lai Hkyet camp located in Laiza, alongside the Chinese border in the northern state of Kachin.

On Oct. 2, the Nobel Prize Winners for 2023 were announced. The Nobel Prize was first developed conceptually by Alfred Nobel, a Renaissance inventor, entrepreneur, scientist and businessman. He also held interests in poetry and drama. Each of his interests are reflected in the six different types of Nobel Prizes, which are Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economics.

Thousands of Palestinians and Israelis dead in Israel-Hamas war

Israel has declared war on Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, after it launched an unprecedented attack by air, land and sea on southern Israel. The IDF has amassed military personnel and equipment at the border of Israel and Gaza after it announced plans to carry out “an integrated and coordinated attack from the air, sea and land.” With Israel calling up 360,000 reservists ahead of the attack, a cessation of hostilities seems to be a distant prospect.

U.S. soldier returns after North Korea detainment

Sept. 27 marked the release and return of Travis King, a United States soldier who was taken into North Korean custody this summer. King is a 23 year old soldier who crossed into North Korea from South Korea according to NPR. He joined the Army in 2021 and is a private second class and cavalry scout.

The United States House of Representatives enters uncharted waters with the recent removal of Republican Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. This ousting is quite extraordinary, marking the first time in U.S. history a speaker has been voted out of office. Several members of the GOP aligned with the House Democrats and moved to push McCarthy out of office, rebelling against their own party.

Biden announces new plans to aid in student debt relief

The Biden administration is once again trying to provide debt relief to the millions of U.S. citizens who have student loans. On Oct. 4, President Joe Biden announced that 125,000 Americans will be approved for $9 billion in debt relief. This announcement comes after the Supreme Court struck down Biden’s former loan forgiveness program and as student debt repayments restart.
