With the 2025 season fast approaching, the College’s baseball team is hard at work preparing for what they anticipate will be a successful campaign. Following a productive offseason, the Lions are eager to take the field and build upon last year’s progress, with their sights set on a return to regionals.

“We're gonna be really good and improve from last year,” said junior kinesiology and health sciences major Mike Doran. “Physically, we’ve been lifting, hitting and throwing all winter, and we’re carrying that into preseason. Mentally, we’re getting ahead of our grades and classes so we can focus on baseball more in-season.”

That combination of physical preparation and mental discipline has been a key focus for the team throughout the offseason. Ensuring that academic responsibilities are in check allows the players to devote their full attention to the game when it matters most.

Leadership will be a crucial factor for the Lions this season, with experienced players setting the tone both on and off the field. Fifth-year Ryan Goodall, senior Mike Lagravenis and graduate transfer Gianni Maranno from Kean University, are expected to play significant roles after coming off strong seasons last year. Their sharp performances throughout the preseason have further solidified their importance to the team’s success.

The Lions have named Joe Godri as their interim head baseball coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in the sport. Godri most recently served as head coach at Villanova University from 2002 to 2016, winning 360 games in 15 seasons at the helm. Under his leadership, Villanova had two 30-win seasons and appeared in two Big East Championships. He developed 28 All-Big East selections, three All-Americans and saw 24 players drafted into professional baseball. Godri also served on the USA Baseball selection committee in 2006.

He takes over following the retirement of Dean Glus, who had been head coach of the Lions since 2008. His appointment reflects the commitment to excellence that has been a hallmark of the Lions' athletic programs.

Doran is not the only one confident in the team’s trajectory. Senior Connor Wood echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the team’s drive to elevate their performance.

“We expect to improve from last year and be back in regionals,” said Wood, a management major. “Getting ahead with school and pushing each other to be our best in practice has been a huge focus.”

One of the team’s biggest strengths heading into the season is its pitching staff. Wood noted their impressive form during the preseason and believes they are primed for a standout year.

“I think our pitching staff in general has looked great so far, and they are poised for a great year,” he added.

As the Lions continue their preseason grind, the excitement surrounding the program is palpable. With a combination of seasoned leadership, offseason dedication and a strong team mentality, the College’s baseball team is setting the stage for a season filled with promise and potential.
