If you’re searching for a new drama crime show to binge in a day, “High Potential” is the perfect choice. It has everything from humor to mystery to suspense. It is a quick watch, with a captivating plot and loveable characters.
The first episode of “High Potential” was released on Sep. 17, 2024, releasing episodes every Tuesday on ABC and streaming services like Hulu and Disney+. The season wrapped on Feb. 11, with its 13th episode.
This new series tells the story of a single mother, Morgan, with an extraordinary mind and a knack for solving crimes. She is then accidentally thrown from being a janitor into the life of being a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department.
On top of that, she is forced into an unlikely partnership with a stubborn and uptight LAPD Detective Karadec.
The first season takes viewers through her hectic home life, as well as the craziness that goes on in her mind. Watchers get the chance to see her balance a new job, partnership and taking care of her three kids, Ava, Elliot and Chloe.
In each episode, Morgan is presented with a new case, and her unconventional problem-solving skills are put to the test, racing against the clock to put these criminals away.
In addition to a new case in each episode, Morgan is also searching for clues that can lead to solving the case of her husband, Roman, who disappeared 15 years ago.
Each episode of this show is captivating, entertaining and humorous. When you tune in each week, there is a new crime to solve that allows the viewer to remain engaged with the show. The storyline of Morgan’s missing husband also adds to the excitement and shock value of the show when new findings are discovered.
Morgan’s impressive mind and witty humor make her an incredibly enjoyable character to watch. Karadec and Morgan’s interactions also add another element to the show, as these two characters prove that opposites can truly attract, even if there are bumps in the road.
Watching Morgan as a mother adds another component to the show; it allows viewers to see the sensitive and nurturing side of her character when getting a look into her life at home.
Even though Morgan is the female lead of the show, more is revealed about the lives of each of the characters she works with, including her boss Selena and her other co-workers, Oz and Daphne.
This show is overall enjoyable, engaging and thought-provoking. Morgan reminds me of Spencer Reid from “Criminal Minds,” as their minds work in a very similar fashion. Her unique tactics for crime-solving make her character that much more fascinating on screen.
This show is a combination of the humor and light-heartedness of “The Rookie” and the psychological complexity of “Criminal Minds.” If you enjoy either of these shows, “High Potential” is right up your alley.
However, this season does end abruptly with a shocking cliffhanger. Even though it will leave you wanting more, it still felt like an odd ending to a season.
On the other hand, fans will not have to wait too long to watch Morgan’s intellect in action, as it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that “High Potential” will be coming back with a second season.
In season two, I hope they continue to dive further into Morgan and Karadac's relationship, as well as give the audience a deeper look into the lives of the other characters, like Oz and Daphne, as they are major parts of the show.
Nevertheless, I am excited and interested to see where they take the show after its unexpected ending. I am remaining hopeful that eager fans, such as myself, will not have to wait too long for an additional season.
