The Signal and Campus Police work together on a weekly basis to inform the campus community about crime on and around campus. All records given to The Signal are public records and do not contain personal information. Some information provided may be triggering for some students.
Dec. 2: Bitten hand
A sugar glider that had been loose in the R. Barbara Gitenstein library bit a library student employee's hand several times when she attempted to pick it up and move it outside in the late morning.
“I lived in the middle of the woods and any animal doesn’t scare me,” the library student employee told The Signal in a written statement.
TCNJ facilities had already attempted to capture the sugar glider with traps that morning before the library student employee arrived at work. Later on, when the library student employee was completing a work-related task, she noticed the sugar glider and decided to take things into her own hands — literally.
“I was gushing blood and asked a random girl to help me,” the library student employee said.
The person she asked for help called 911.
Campus Police, Ewing Township EMS and animal control responded to the scene. EMT’s cared for the library student employee, and later transported her to Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell where she received six shots. She then went back to the hospital multiple times to receive a preventative rabies shot, and take “giant pills” for a week.
Animal control captured the sugar glider, examined it and determined that it was not rabid.
Dec. 2: Careless cooking
Careless cooking caused a fire alarm in Brewster Hall to go off in the early evening. The building was not evacuated because the alarm was limited to the room where students were cooking.
Campus Police, Ewing Township Fire Department and Prospect Heights Fire Department responded to the alarm. Firefighters found no signs of smoke or fire in the room, and deemed it safe to re-enter.
Dec. 4: Stuck in elevator
A student got stuck in an Education Building elevator in the late afternoon.
Campus Police, Ewing Township Fire Department, the College’s fire safety specialist, Ewing Township EMS and an Otis Elevator technician responded to the scene. The responders helped the student to be released from the elevator within 18 minutes of it becoming stuck.
The student refused any medical attention, and the elevator was placed out of service.
Dec. 4: Gym theft
A student was missing $250 from his wallet after leaving his wallet unsecured at the Fitness Center at Campus Town.
The student told Campus Police that he forgot to bring a lock to secure his belongings in a locker while he worked out. So, he left his gym bag and wallet unattended while he worked out for over two hours in the early evening.
When the student returned to his dorm, he noticed that the money was missing and reported it to Campus Police. The money has not been found.
Dec. 5: Another corn hole injury
A student injured his arm after tripping and falling over one of the corn hole boards in front of the Brower Student Center just after noon. The student did not notice the board because he was distracted by emailing his professor on his phone.
Campus Police, TCNJ EMS and Ewing Township EMS responded to a report of the injury. The student told responders that he believed his arm was broken. He was later transported to Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell.
This is the second time a student has been injured this semester after tripping over one of the corn hole boards that were gifted to the College by the class of 2024.
Dec. 5: False alarm
Forcina Hall was evacuated in the early afternoon when a fire alarm went off. Heat from construction in the building triggered the alarm.
Campus Police and the College’s fire safety specialist confirmed that there were no signs of smoke or fire in the building, and then deemed it safe to re-enter.
Dec. 7: Intoxicated student
A student who felt nauseous and dizzy after drinking alcohol was transported from their room in Travers Hall to the hospital in the early morning.
The student had been drinking at an off-campus party throughout the previous night, but left when they felt dizzy. The student returned to their dorm room where they threw up.
An hour after the student vomited, the student’s roommate called Campus Police who responded along with Ewing Township EMS. The student was then brought to Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell.
Dec. 7: Bike theft
A student told Campus Police that their light blue Diamondback mountain bike was stolen from a bike rack outside of Hausdoerffer Hall in the early morning.
The student said that they had seen the bike on the rack the previous night. Campus Police searched every known bike rack on campus for the missing bike, but were unable to locate it.
The bike remains missing. Anyone with information about the bike can contact Campus Police.
Dec. 7: Can’t see
An employee of the College who lives on Green Lane asked Campus Police for assistance outside of his house in the early morning because he had not been able to see out of one of his eyes for three days. The employee was uneasy on his feet, slurring his speech and smelled like alcohol, according to a responding officer.
Ewing Township EMS responded to the scene with Campus Police. EMT’s cared for the employee while he decided if he wanted to be taken to the hospital. The employee ultimately decided to be transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
Dec. 7: Burned popcorn
Two students burned microwave popcorn in an Allen Hall room in the late evening, triggering a smoke detector and fire alarm. The alarm was limited to the room where the popcorn was being microwaved, so the building was not evacuated.
Ewing Township Fire Department and West Trenton Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene, found no signs of smoke or fire and deemed the room safe to re-enter.
