“Halloween” (1978)
Written and directed by legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter, “Halloween” is a classic cat-and-mouse slasher. The film follows babysitter Laurie Strode and her friends as they are stalked and preyed upon by Michael Myers, notorious for murdering his sister when he was 7. After 15 years of captivity, Myers is back home and bloodthirsty. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a 97% critic score and an 89% audience score.
“Scream” (1996)
Directed by horror royalty Wes Craven, “Scream” is a teen whodunit slasher. The film follows Sidney Prescott and her high school friends in Woodsboro, California. As the anniversary of Sidney’s mother's death approaches, the town is plagued by a serial killer who asks his victims, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” On Rotten Tomatoes, the film garnered an 81% critic score and an 80% audience score.
“Coraline” (2009)
Written and directed by master animator Henry Selick, “Coraline” is a dark fantasy film. The film follows Coraline coming across a mysterious door while exploring her new house. Oblivious to what’s on the other end, she’s transported to a utopia identical to her original life. However, the perfected world gradually turns sinister, putting Coraline on an enigmatic adventure. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film gained a 91% critic score and a 79% audience score.
“Get Out” (2017)
Written and directed by innovative auteur Jordan Peele, “Get Out” is a psychological horror film. The film follows Chris, an African American who is nervous about meeting his Caucasian girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Although the initial impression is pleasant and doesn’t raise alarms, as the days go on, things become increasingly unsettling. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a 98% critic score, an 86% audience score, and an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
