On Saturday, Nov. 9, the College’s wrestling team traveled to Troy, N.Y., where it faced Castleton University, Ithaca College and Johnson & Wales University in the Journeyman Duals.
Against Castleton, the team claimed its first victory of the season with a 30-12 win. Junior Dan Ortega weighed in at 125 pounds and started the day off with a pin, followed by a major decision at 133 pounds by junior Jake Giordano.
Sophomore Matt Surich claimed a 5-2 victory at 149 pounds, followed by two major decisions at 165 pounds and 174 pounds by sophomore John Garda and senior Dan Kilroy, respectively. Sophomore Quinn Haddad earned a decision victory at 197 pounds and sophomore heavyweight Thomas Marretta pinned his opponent.
Against Johnson & Wales, Ortega, Kilroy and freshman Matthew Sacco at 157 pound all earned victories. Kilroy earned another major decision and Sacco won via a decision victory. The three students were the only ones to claim a win and the Lions suffered their first loss of the season.
In the day’s final match against Ithaca, the College claimed a victory to improve to 2-1 overall. Freshman Nick Denora claimed the first win of the match at 125 pounds with an 8-5 decision.
Giordano earned a 7-5 win, followed by junior Anthony Rua, who claimed a 9-6 victory at 141 pounds. Junior Robert Dinger earned a major decision victory at 149 pounds and Sacco won his match 10-7. Garda finished off the match by winning 8-4 and junior Thomas Anderson claimed a 12-2 victory at 197 pounds.
The team returns to the mat this weekend, as it travels to Bristol, Rhode Island, to participate in the Roger Williams Invitational from Friday, Nov. 15, to Saturday, Nov. 16.
