The field hockey team celebrated the holiday weekend with a victory against The Catholic University of America on Saturday, Sept. 1.
The Lions opened up their 2018 season at home with a remarkable win of 6-0, improving their record to 1-0.
Junior forward Cayla Andrews put the team on the scoreboard shortly after the start of the game. Andrews received a pass from sophomore forward Tori Tiefenthaler that helped make the College’s first goal of the season.
Andrews also helped junior forward Tori Hannah make her first goal of her field hockey career at the College. The Lions were up, 2-0, and were able to hold onto the lead going into halftime.
On top of helping her teammates score, Andrews also managed to get herself a goal five minutes into the second half. Recovering off of a rebound from a penalty corner shot, Andrews claimed her second goal of the game.
Within two minutes, junior forward/midfielder Kayla Paterson scored off a pass from junior midfielder/defender Sidney Padilla. Tiefenthaler then recorded her first goal of the season.
To conclude the game, senior midfielder/defender Caroline Quinn took the opportunity to advance the Lions by scoring yet another goal.
It seemed that the Lions controlled the game offensively, but the team’s defense was also a vital feature of accomplishing this win. Junior goalkeeper Maddie Beaumont blocked four of Catholic University’s attempts at a shot.
The field hockey team will continue to defend Lions territory when they face Juniata College at home on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
