Equipped with Broadway favorites, TCNJ Musical Theatre sponsored Broadway Night on Saturday, Oct. 30 where members performed songs from various musicals in the Library Auditorium.
Joe Tible, sophomore civil engineering major, Ray McCue, senior Spanish major, and Liz Gerger, sophomore digital arts major performed “I Wish I could Go Back to College” from “Avenue Q,” which solicited laughs from the audience as the trio dramatically reminisced about the past.
As members of TMT, Briana Luppino, freshman elementary education and psychology major, and Katie Moran, freshman graphic design major, convinced their floor to take part in Broadway night.
The Travers 10 freshmen girls paired up with the boys to sing “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now” from “Hairspray.” As a crowd favorite, the audience roared with laughter as the boys, dressed up as women, pretended to scold the girls, or their “daughters,” while dancing and singing to the beat.
TMT secretary and junior vocal performance major Sergio Hernandez and Gerger, humorously dramatized their movements by feeding off each other in “The Song That Goes Like This” from “Spamalot.”
“All For the Best” from “Godspell,” featured an up-beat duet performed by Kelly Cosentino, freshman health and exercise major, and McCue, senior Spanish and secondary education major in which they demonstrated their tapping skills while filling the auditorium with laughter.
“The Dark I Know Well” from “Spring Awakening” was sung with saddened, passionate faces by Tia Brown, junior special education and women and gender studies major, and Chrissy Isola, sophomore philosophy and religion major.
“Our pianist (Truc-Lan Vu, 2010 alumna) really wanted someone to perform (“The Dark I Know Well”),” Brown said. “We like it a lot.”
In chairs facing back to back, Laura Amatulli, junior math and secondary education major, and Vianna Fagel, sophomore statistics major, told the story of the anxiety between two women by performing “What Kind of Girl is She?” from “What Kind of Girl is She?”
Solemn, powerful solos were performed by Nicole Mordarski, freshman music and education major, performing “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from “The Phantom of the Opera,” and Ishani Sandesara, junior biology major, performing “Mama Who Bore Me” from “Spring Awakening.” .Other expressive solos were accomplished by McCue’s “Nothing in Common” from
“Jason Robert Brown” and Joe Fillari, sophomore economics major, with “Flight” from “Craig Carnelia.”
The audience was kept engaged between songs with colorful and humorous transitions by the cast.
“I thought overall they demonstrated a productive, fun and eager performance,” said Justin Dwight, senior music major from American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.
