Although we’ve been spoiled with summer weather all month long, we need to accept the fact that autumn is right around the corner. Since there is no way of stopping the seasons from changing, we might as well put it to good use.
Believe it or not, we have access to many fascinating and resourceful things that are within a reasonable distance from our campus. Sometimes it’s hard to realize this while we’re so isolated in our studies and occasional social life that when we are finally able to latch onto any free time, it’s usually spent relaxing or going out with friends.
New Hope, Pa., is a popular destination for students of age to bar hop throughout its historic main street. But aside from the bar scene and adorable, one-of-a-kind little shops, New Hope has an array of activities for individuals of any age to enjoy.
Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve is the perfect place to begin, especially in this weather. Ideal for beginning hikers, this park is a short but sweet nature walk with various historical landmarks to see along the way. Student admission is three dollars with ID and five without for the entire day. The park is open year round, so you will always be able to find something new along the different trails, depending on the season.
While the leaves begin to change colors, so do the blooming flowers. Marsh Marigold is the best trail to catch fall foliage this time of year. Each trail runs about a mile or two, so it’s easy to see everything they have to offer, including an old rustic cabin and a stone bridge arched over the shallow Pidcock Creek.
If you’re feeling daring, hike up a little farther to Bowman’s Hill Tower. Built as a monument commemorating George Washington and his army, the 125-foot tall tower overlooks a wide range of the Delaware River area. The tower belongs to the Washington Crossing Historic Park, but direct access is offered from the wildflower preserve. For an additional small fee, you can walk to the top of the tower where you’ll be able to experience breathtaking views of historic Bucks County.
Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve definitely provides a different way to free your mind from the everyday hustle and bustle of student life. Next time you have a day off, grab some friends and take a 15-minute drive up to New Hope. It couldn’t hurt to mix up your daily routine!
