The Student Finance Board (SFB) agreed to supplement funds raised by the senior class for the annual Senior Week in a 7-2-3 vote during the Feb. 11 SFB meeting.
The supplement comes in addition to more than $12,000 allocated for general expenditures.
"A lot of us thought it was best to match (the senior class) dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000," Garrett Hoffman, SFB administrative director, said. "It sets a precedent for future years, but only for this year, we'll also pay general expenditures."
Following difficulties finding corporate sponsorships for the event, the SFB allocation allowed the College tradition to continue. Otherwise, it would have been canceled.
"The senior class is an exception to rules of the Student Government Association (SGA) or the College Union Board (CUB)," Steve Kocher, assistant financial director, said. "It's special."
Funding to pay expenditures will come from funding from other classes, but the policy will be discontinued after this year.
SFB stipulated an SGA contribution of $3,000 and allocated $12,156 for general expenditures and matching fundraising up to $20,000.
Approximately 570 students have signed up to participate in Senior Week.
SFB unanimously allocated $3,150 to CUB and Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority for Yo Soy Latina, a play written by Linda Nieves-Powell.
The event will be co-sponsored by Women in Learning and Leadership (WILL) and Unión Latina.
"This is a perfect fictional ceremony to voice Latina issues," Estephanie Betances, WILL member and junior psychology major, said. "It would reeducate others about issues."
The funding will pay for the concert hall, hospitality and publicity.
The event is scheduled to be held in the Music Building on March 19 at 8 p.m. The sponsors said they expect about 300 attendees.
"I don't see too big of a problem," Mike Stolar, operations director, said. "The only thing is that co-sponsorship with CUB is just another way to get money."
SFB also approved the Hellenic Society and CUB's Greek Independence Day movie night. The groups will be screening "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" in the Brower Student Center at 8 p.m. on March 25.
"We think it would be a great event because many people love the movie, not only Greeks and actual Greek people," Ioanna Tsakos, junior biology major and founder of the Hellenic Society, said.
The funds would cover rights to the movie, traditional Greek food, supplies and publicity.
SFB allocated $2,070 to SGA for a bus trip to the St. Patrick's Day Parade, scheduled for March 1 in Belmar, N.J.
Funds would cover costs for 10 buses, carrying 125 people per class, in addition to two half-page Signal advertisements.
Tickets will be sold the week before the trip.
In an 8-1-3 vote, SFB also allocated $570 for Junior Night at Comedy Works, featuring HBO and VH1 comedians.
"We're trying to promote the junior class since Senior Night is so successful," Eva LaSata, SGA assistant representative, said.
The event will be open to 100 people, charging $5 per ticket. Extra tickets will be sold to other classes.
