The Student Finance Board (SFB) unanimously awarded the Inter-Greek Council (IGC) $5,177 for its "Everything You Need to Know About the Opposite Sex" lecture, featuring Lori Hart Ebert.
According to IGC, there are approximately 800 students at the College who participate in Greek life, making up to 13 percent of the student body. IGC projected 600 students would attend the event.
SFB agreed to the request, with the stipulation that a maximum of 50 percent of the Greek community could attend, leaving room for other students who might be interested.
Funding includes $5,000 for Ebert's talent package, and $177 for Kendall Hall fees and publicity.
The event is scheduled for Oct. 22 at 9 p.m.
The Homecoming Spirit Week Committee was also unanimously awarded $2,625 for two Homecoming Spirit Week events, "Lip Sync and Dance."
Allocated funding will pay for chair rentals and a stage to be set up in the Student Recreation Center.
The scheduled date is Oct. 16 from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
SFB awarded the Order of the Golden Lion $1,740 for its annual medieval-themed "Samhain Feast." Funding for cooking supplies, safety supplies, medieval tokens, decoration material and a full-page Signal ad was subtracted from an initial request of $2,164.50.
Of the funds, $1,000 will pay for medieval food, $200 for a workshop demonstrating medieval culture and the rest for table supplies and supplies to make costumes, as well as the ad.
The feast is scheduled for Nov. 1 in the Cromwell Hall main lounge.
A $2,098 request was awarded to the Student Government Association (SGA) for a lecture featuring Davy Rothbart, editor and co-creator of FOUND Magazine, which features everyday objects as "found art." Rothbart will discuss how he started the magazine.
Garrett Hoffman, sophomore representative, said, "I think people could probably relate to this guy. It's different."
The event is scheduled for Nov. 13 in Brower Student Center 202.
SGA and the College Union Board were awarded $279 from a $423.40 request for a screening of "Holler Back: Not Voting in an American Town" and discussion with the director, Lulu Fries'dat.
SFB subtracted $75 for refreshments from the funding, as it did not find it necessary for the event. A full-page Signal ad was also reduced to a half-page ad. Of the money awarded, $200 will pay for the rights to show the film and publicity for Fries'dat. Other funding will pay for photocopies for publicity.
The screening is scheduled for Oct. 8 in the student center food court.
SFB awarded $53 to the Astronomy Club from an initial request of $217.50. The event, "Star Party," an annual event where students can observe the night sky through three telescopes, was denied $165 worth of pizza, as SFB did not find the food essential to the event. Allocated funding will pay for soda, chips and publicity.
The scheduled date is Oct. 1 on Quimby's Prairie.
SFB, which prior to the meeting had a total balance of $273,970.68, allocated a total of $11,972.
