The Student Government Association (SGA) planned for upcoming events such as freshman elections, a voter registration drive and the 9/11 Memorial at its first general body meeting on Sept. 3.
The voter registration drive, which is planned to kick off shortly, will give students the opportunity to register to vote and provide absentee ballots.
Michael Peters, vice president of Legal and Governmental Affairs, said SGA's intention is to "eliminate the apathy on campus."
The Sept. 11 Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Brower Student Center atrium. Nora Wentworth, vice president of Community Relations, asked for everyone's participation in this "meaningful ceremony."
Brian Block, vice president of Administration and Finance, said he is currently negotiating with Party City for a Halloween fundraiser, which may include students getting a 20 percent discount on Halloween costumes.
Other topics discussed at the meeting included the success of the meal equivalency increase and the Library café hours extension, as well as an announcement that only a few weeks remain of paper plate dining in Eickhoff Dining Hall.
Sana Fathima, alternate student trustee, invited anyone interested in running for SGA to attend today's SGA meeting at 3 p.m. in student center 202W.
Fathima said attending the meeting would provide a great experience for anyone interested in involvement in the program. Later today, at 8 p.m. in the library auditorium, there will be a candidate forum for those interested. Online elections will be held Sept. 15 and 16.
William Plastine, executive vice president, said he plans to revise the SGA attendance policy and the associate member program, which has been an option for students who decide they aren't ready for a senator position.
Plastine said this program has been "historically weak."
Plastine said he hopes to make a "real difference this year."
