The Lions claimed shutout victories over their opponents on Saturday when both the men's and women's teams defeated Hobart and William Smith colleges, respectively. The women's team went on to defeat Salisbury University the next day.
The women's team, ranked No. 29 nationally and No. 8 regionally, bested the William Smith Herons 9-0 and the Salisbury Sea Gulls 8-1, improving its record to 10-1.
Freshman Jackie Shtemberg, ranked No. 9 in the region, took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Heron sophomore Chelsea Rauck and a 6-2, 6-3 win over Salisbury senior Erika Mitry, bringing her singles match record to 22-3 this year, and 10-0 in dual meet play.
"This win actually means a lot to me. I knew (Rauck) was a really good player, so to really just try and relax and play well was a great feeling," Shtemberg said.
Shtemberg and her doubles partner, junior Christina Contrafatto, improved their record to 20-4 overall and 9-1 in dual meet play with wins over Rauck and junior Tara Ware 8-2 and Salisbury's top pair of Mitry and sophomore Hannah Parsons 8-2.
Senior Kristen Turturiello marked her 61st career win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over freshman Shari Damon. Turturiello is 12-3 this season.
"Coach told us that last year (the College) won 5-4 which is really tight and to do even better means our team is doing really well and growing stronger," Shtemberg, who learned about last year's result from head coach Scott Dicheck, said.
The No. 9 ranked men's team had equal success against the Hobart College Statesmen on Saturday with a 9-0 shutout victory. The Lions are 7-1 overall.
Junior Michael Klimchak bounced back into the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over sophomore James Micheroni. Klimchak is ranked No. 15 nationally in singles play with a record of 13-2 so far this year.
Klimchak teamed with junior Roger Mosteller to record an 8-1 win against Micheroni and senior Matt Silver. The win improved the No. 10 regionally ranked pair to 14-2 overall with an 8-0 dual meet record this season. The pair is 17-0 over the past two years in dual meet play.
The wins have instilled renewed confidence in the Lions to move forward following the tough losses to Mary Washington last weekend in Virginia.
"It was great just to get back on the winning streak and to give us confidence going into next week's big match against Swarthmore (College)," Klimchak said.
The men's team hosts Swarthmore on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The women's team hosts Vassar College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
