The College's tennis teams continued their dominance as the Lions women recorded a 6-3 win over regional rival Vassar College on Thursday and the Lions men trounced Swarthmore College 8-1 on Friday.
Both teams went undefeated in doubles matches. The women's team, No. 28 in the nation and No. 7 in the region, improves its record to 11-1 overall and breaks a six-match losing streak against the Brewers, No. 16 in the nation, dating back to April 16, 2000.
"The win is an incredible feeling and I love it because I knew a while back that Vassar was our biggest rival, and to finally beat them after a long streak of losing shows that our team is definitely getting a lot stronger," freshman Jackie Shtemberg said.
In a match featuring two nationally recognized players, Shtemberg, ranked No. 9 in the region, posted an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Brewers senior Debbie Sharnak, ranked No. 6 in the region. The win puts Shtemberg at 23-3 overall this year and 11-0 in dual meet play.
The College's top pair, Shtemberg and junior Christina Contrafatto, recorded an 8-6 win over Vassar's top pair of Sharnak and senior Kelly Graham. The Lions duo is 21-4 overall and 10-1 in dual meet play.
The men's team also tasted victory last weekend, defeating Swarthmore 8-1. The Lions, ranked No. 9 in the region, are now 8-1 overall, putting the Garnets at 1-7.
Ranked No. 15 nationally, Lions junior Michael Klimchak tallied an intense 6-1, 7-5 win over junior Jonathon Lo to improve to 14-2 on the year.
"Our team hasn't been given enough credit ranking-wise, so to beat the No. 27 team in the country 8-1, it shows that our team is for real," Klimchak said.
Klimchak and junior Roger Mosteller teamed up to take the No. 1 doubles match win (8-4) over Swarthmore's Lo and senior Jonathon Reiss. The College's top men's pair is ranked No. 10 in the region and is 15-2 overall with a 9-0 dual meet record.
Mosteller is 13-3 and junior Eric Ferriere is 15-3 overall this season in singles competition.
At No. 2 doubles, Ferriere and senior Corey Ball teamed up for an 8-4 defeat of freshman Brian Nalitt and sophomore Kevin Shaughnessy.
At No. 3 doubles, Lions sophomore James Vance and freshman Jeremy Eckardt beat senior Sam Sidhu and sophomore Mark Greenburg 8-4.
The men travel to Haverford College Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match while the women host New York University Friday at 2 p.m.
