The men's tennis team, No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast region, continued to dominate in dual meet competition this weekend with an 8-1 win over No. 11 ranked Washington College from the South Atlantic region and a 9-0 win over No. 11 ranked Vassar College from the Northeast region.
Junior Michael Klimchak reached the 50-win milestone on Saturday. He improved his career record to 50-9 after defeating Vassar senior captain Erik Skartvedt at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0.
The College won all the singles matches, with freshman Jeremy Eckardt tallying a shutout victory over Vassar freshman Jeremy Arthur 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Roger Mosteller won both of his singles matches this weekend and now holds a 9-2 singles mark on the year.
In doubles competition, the College's 13th regionally ranked No. 1 pair, Mosteller and Klimchak, improved to 10-2 together this season with a 4-0 mark in dual meet competition after defeating Vassar's top pair, junior Ashish Patil and freshman Michael Mattelson, 8-2.
Klimchak also made a statement in Friday's competition by defeating Washington College's two-time All-American senior Arturo Solis in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-1). Solis finished last season ranked No. 4 in Division III.
"I knew that he was such a solid competitor and I would need to play my best tennis to have a shot at beating him," Klimchak said. "It was the best match of my career here so far and it was such a great feeling afterwards."
The women's team achieved equal success this weekend as they downed Washington College, No. 9 in the South Atlantic region. The College is now ranked No. 29 nationally and No. 8 regionally with a 7-0 record.
Freshman Jackie Shtemberg ousted Washington College's junior Allison Daciek at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2. Ranked No. 9 regionally in singles action, Shtemberg is now 18-3 on the season.
Shtemberg paired with junior Christina Contrafatto in the 8-0 defeat of Daciek and her partner, freshman Kellie Foster, at No. 1 doubles. The 2006 ITA East Regional Doubles champions with ITA All-America honors are 17-3 together for their careers.
Contrafatto extended her undefeated singles streak to 5-0 with a win at No. 2 singles over sophomore Kristen Hossick 6-3, 6-0.
The women's scheduled match against Muhlenberg College on Sunday was postponed because of the possibility of inclement weather.
The Lions men host Babson College this Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center, while the next women's game is against Ithaca College at home on March 9.
