October has arrived and Hollywood is preparing to release an onslaught of terror in movie theaters.
Several films of madness, macabre and mystery will be unveiled in the weeks leading up to Halloween. With one premiering each week, you can get your fill of horror before the big day.
Sequels seem to be the name of the Hollywood horror game this season, ratcheting up the fear and frenzy on their popular predecessors.
Three of the most anticipated releases revisit some of the biggest horror films from the past few years.
"Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning"
Oct. 6
Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman
Starring: Jordana Brewster, Andrew Bryniarski, R. Lee Emery
This prequel to the 2003 remake of the 1974 cult classic gore-fest starts the Hollywood scare season off with a bang.
Explaining the twisted and deadly nurturing of the killer who will later be called "Leatherface," the movie revolves around four friends who are driving through the Texas desert.
After an accident in the middle of nowhere involving two motorcyclists and the arrival of the local sheriff (Emery), the group of friends finds itself being hunted down by the demented Thomas Hewitt (Bryniarski) and the rest of his deranged family.
Sheriff Hoyt also just happens to be Hewitt's older brother, who takes some of the friends hostage.
Not only will the film deliver the graphic and relentless gore that fans of the series expect, but it also shines frightening light on the early years of the now classic horror villain.
"The Grudge 2"
Oct. 13
Directed by: Takashi Shimizu
Starring: Amber Tamblyn, Sarah Michelle Gellar
The sequel to the 2004 freak show takes place immediately after the events of the first film, in which Karen Davis (Gellar) contends with an ancient supernatural force fueled by rage. Tamblyn plays Davis's sister, who searches to find some answers about a cursed mansion in Tokyo.
After arriving, she receives more than she bargains for when she encounters the mysterious and haunting past of the former residents.
The film features the same Japanese style of horror that appeared in "The Ring" and the original "Grudge," while further elaborating on the details of the family and the mansion.
"Saw III"
Oct. 27
Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman
Starring: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith
The last major flick to come out before Halloween is the much-anticipated addition to the now infamous "Saw" series.
The Jigsaw killer (Bell) has gone missing as his victim-turned-apprentice Amanda (Smith) steps into the spotlight to oversee the demented games.
Focusing on two specific victims and their struggle to escape Jigsaw's brutal scenarios, the movie promises to provide many flinching moments while carrying on Jigsaw's story and his intentions for society.
