On Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 a.m., Campus Police officers spotted a car driving the wrong way around the Norsworthy traffic circle. Officers stopped the vehicle.
In an attempt to pull over, the driver hit the curb. As the officers approached the vehicle, they noticed the smell of alcohol emanating from the open driver's side window and that there was a male passenger in the car.
When the driver was asked for his papers, he only produced his license.
The officer informed the driver that he would need his insurance card and vehicle registration, to which the driver asked, "Do you want my insurance card, too?" The officer asked the pair in the car if they had been drinking, and both said, "No."
The driver was asked to exit the vehicle to take some sobriety tests. He failed.
He was taken to the Hopewell Police Department for a breathalyzer test and to have his car impounded. The driver was issued a summons for driving while intoxicated.
The passenger was also asked to exit the car, and officers detected a slight odor of alcohol. The officers asked if he had consumed alcohol that night. The passenger admitted to having consumed alcohol. He also said that he was only 19, which the officers confirmed after checking his ID.
Having determined that he was underage, the student was issued a summons for underage possession of alcoholic beverages.
