Big Orange Cone wanted to "give a little bit" to the College as it rocked out singing some of the most popular rock songs last Tuesday night in the Rathskellar. The cover band, made up of five young men, lit up the stage as it has done for the past five years visiting the College.
Together for nine years, Big Orange Cone has never disappointed its audience. The band members hail from northern New Jersey, which makes it rather convenient for them to frequently return to the College.
All summer long, the band played at venues, mostly clubs, down the Jersey Shore. Though hitting the local club circuit is the band's signature, its members do like performing at different venues.
"We like coming here because it's fun and it's different from normal clubs," Will Harrington, the lead vocalist who energetically pumped up the audience with each tune, said.
"It's also a lot earlier than most clubs that we play in, so that's always a plus," Walter Stacy, lead guitarist, said.
The show was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and end at 11 p.m., but unfortunately, the audience did not receive the full three hours as promised because the show did not get underway until 9 p.m.
The delay was attributed to the band's drummer, Joe Timm, who was running late. Instead of waiting, one of the other band members, co-frontman Dennis Zimmerman, played the drums.
This wouldn't have been possible without the help of the CUB-Rat co-chair Matt DeLuca. DeLuca, junior political science major, came to the rescue, providing his own drumsticks for the pseudo-drummer.
The delay was somewhat disheartening to several people, especially Mary Mamrak, co-chair of CUB-Rat, the organization that sponsored the event. "They are supposed to play three 45-minute sets," Mamrak, sophomore elementary education/English major, said.
Knowing it had to make up for lost time, Big Orange Cone made sure to please the crowd, once the band hit the stage.
After starting the night off with "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf, the band continued with songs like "I Wanna Be Sedated" by The Ramones and "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers. Jen Chesnulovitch, senior psychology and business administration major, took a break from studying in the library to check out the band.
"They were super-amazing and really good-looking," Chesnulovitch said. "Even without their drummer, they totally rocked the place."
Not everything goes as planned, but what matters most is putting on a great show - and Big Orange Cone, once again, made the College not only smile, but rock out.
