Kappa Delta once again showed how to support a serious cause with a night of fun.
Last Thursday, the sorority held its annual Shamrockin' Runway Fashion Show to raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America, which aids in the prevention of child abuse, neglect and mistreatment.
The event featured contestants from different campus organizations, mainly Greek, who sponsored the event and competed in three different categories: formal wear, mixer wear and a talent competition.
Three judges, including local celebrity Hassan, a favorite pizza delivery man, crowned the winners. Kristian Elvina, sophomore health and exercise science major of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, triumphed over the men and Rowena Briones, sophomore communication studies major of Sigma Sigma Sigma, outshone the ladies.
Both Elvina and Briones seemed to be on the same track. Both decided to go with a "Luau/Hawaiian" theme for their mixer wear and chose to display their singing abilities during the talent portion. Granted, in Elvina's case, the term singing is used very loosely.
While Briones wowed the crowd and the judges with her rendition of Madonna's "Like a Prayer," Elvina had them doubling over in laughter during his parody of "A Whole New World" from Disney's "Aladdin."
Other talents included making smoothies, creating an up-do, playing the water glasses and a recreation of the "Zoolander" model-off by contestant Kyle Quinn, freshman sociology major, who represented Phi Kappa Psi.
Ending the talent portion was Drew Beal, junior finance major and Sigma Pi member, with "Drew Beal's Workout Plan." Throughout the night, prizes were raffled off, including jewelry, gift certificates to local restaurants and gift baskets. All proceeds benefited Prevent Child Abuse America.
During the intermission, the audience was also treated to a surprise performance by a Philadelphia singing group, The Odyssey.
While the contestants were there representing their respective organizations, the main reason was to "help out a good cause," Jessica Vogt, senior psychology major from Delta Zeta, said. "I'm glad to be helping out both such a great cause, and also to be helping out my fellow Greeks and representing my sorority."
