The Alpha Gamma Colony of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority celebrated its emergence at the College with a ceremony Saturday night. The ceremony was the culmination of Theta Week: a week's worth of Theta Nu Xi-sponsored events to help promote diversity on campus.
The sorority's seven founding sisters chose New York City as their theme for Theta Week. Big Apple neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Spanish Harlem, and Little Italy were the inspiration for events such as a gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual awareness session, a Latin dance workshop, and a graffiti presentation respectively.
The Latin dance workshop introduced students to the basic steps of merengue, salsa, and bachata while the graffiti display entitled "The Illegal Arts" showed how graffiti has become a global phenomenon used to voice political opinions.
On January 31, the Theta Nu Xi sisters collected donations for the Chinese- American Planning Council, a non-profit organization that assists struggling Chinese-American families in New York City. All proceeds went to the Council's free daycare program.
"We are about more than just mixers," junior journalism major and president of Theta Nu Xi Joanna Holguin said. "We're part of a social movement that brings strong women together."
The seven women take pride in the fact that they each come from different ethnic backgrounds.
"Despite our differences we're a very tight knit community," sophomore biology major and vice-president of Theta Nu Xi Yvette Mocete said.
Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority was founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996 by Melissa Jo Murchison-Blake. Its emergence at the College on Saturday marks the first Theta Nu Xi chapter in New Jersey.
"We all started doing it for the multiculturalism and not for the sisterhood," Mocete said, "now we do it for both."
