The Student Government Association (SGA) approved the Latin Ballroom Dancing Club last week at an unusually short meeting.
The club will provide lessons in cha-cha, salsa, samba and other Latin ballroom styles. An instructor will come to campus for weekly lessons, which will cost $5 per person.
Mollie Seiferas, vice president of Student Services, appointed new SGA liaisons.
Meagan Terry, freshman biology major, will work with Leo Inglima, vice president of Equity and Diversity, as the new Dining Services liaison. Nicole Mummey, freshman special education/English major, will be liaison to the Inter Greek Council. Alaina Griffin, sophomore class secretary, is now the Campus Wellness liaison.
The Secondary Education Teachers Association was also approved at the meeting. The group advocates the needs for secondary education teachers and provides mentoring programs for prospective teachers.
The group will work to get secondary education recognized as a major at the College. Currently, students seeking certification to teach at the secondary level must enroll in a separate academic major.
Sean Stallings, associate director for the office of Residential and Community Development, spoke to SGA about changes to the housing lottery process. He is the second of a number of guest speakers who will inform SGA on new or important policies at the College.
Stallings highlighted changes in the lottery concerning transfer students. Under the new policy, transfer students with 64 credits or more, or who have lived on campus for four semesters, will be eligible for upperclassmen housing. Also, transfer students with 64 credits at the end of the semester will be able to get either the A La Carte or Carte Blanche meal plans.
Dining Services liaisons Terry and Inglima plan to travel to area colleges with Sodexho officials to compare their dining services to those at the College, Inglima said.
They will also visit schools that have more permanent contracts with Sodexho to see how services change based on the contract.
