New styles, trends heat up cold winter months

Heads up! This article was imported from a previous version of The Signal. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

Stores may be ready to put away the winter clothes, but for the rest of us it will be two months until we're ready to break out spring styles. That means there's just enough time to go out and pick up some of the winter's best fashion trends. From military-style clothing to lace and ruffles, there's something for everyone.

Military style

Leave the camouflage pants behind and pick up a military-style jacket instead. The jackets are meant to be a bit masculine, but the tailored fit allows you to show off your shape. Military-style jackets come in both short and long lengths, so look for the one that fits your body best.

Vests

It may be hard to believe, but vests have made a fashion comeback. No longer just meant to be worn by men or underneath suit jackets, vests are spotted everywhere. Wear one to the office by layering it over a collared shirt or fitted sweater.

Or, for a night out on the town, put the vest over a cute camisole or flirty blouse. Finish off the look with anything from tight-fitting pants to a skirt.

Velvet

Here's another fashion trend that could take you by surprise. Try a velvet jacket for a night out or relive your childhood days and put on a velvet dress. Just remember that velvet should be cut in just the right way and it shouldn't be overdone.

Pick one velvet item per outfit, whether it's a jacket, pants or vest. If the thought of wearing velvet is too much for you, pick up a clutch or headband to be a part of this trend.

Sweaters

Sweaters are a winter staple and it's just a matter of keeping up with the latest trends. This year, be sure to pick up a belted sweater. Pick a fitted one and wear it over a camisole with a skirt, or pair jeans with a longer, cozier version.

Feminine touches

Add some fun to any outfit by including a piece that has lace or ruffles. The key to these feminine touches is to remember that less is more. Pick a blouse with a ruffled neckline or put a lace top over a fitted camisole. Bold colors are in style this season, so stay away from the white lace and pick something fun.

Shoes

Things haven't shaken up much in the footwear department. Boots and flats are still the way to go this season. Heeled boots are around, but flat boots are most popular right now. Wear them any way you want, but remember to pick up straight-legged jeans if you want to tuck them into your boots.

Accessories

Look for layered, chunky necklaces in fun colors to spice up any outfit. Try some metallic colors and stones. As for earrings, you can go in one of two directions - either pick long, skinny ones or try some fun hoops.

For the guys

Not to leave the fashion-conscious male behind, there are plenty of trends for guys to follow this winter.

Every guy needs to have a nice blazer that can add class to any outfit. Dress one up and wear it to work or put it over a sweater for a day out.

Collared shirts can always be topped off with a great V-neck sweater for a put-together look.

If you're going for a simple look, try a zip-up cardigan or splurge and go for a cashmere hoodie.

And guys, just because girls are wearing vests more now doesn't mean you have to stop. Put a black vest over a striped shirt and you're set for a special occasion.
