Rain forces an early end to track meet
The College's outdoor track teams were in College Park, Md. for the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday. While only two full events were completed before the meet was ended due to inclement weather, the Lions made the most of the events in which they competed.
Junior Matt Randal won the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:40.04, while the Lions' women posted a 10th place finish in the 4 x 100-meter relay with a time of 48.91. Running the relay was sophomore Khristelle Manuyag and juniors Tiffany Clark, Brittny Boyd and Erika Huggler.
Randal said that another section of the 5,000 meters was supposed to be run later in the day, but that the win still feels good. "It gives me confidence because I got a 5k under my belt, I ran a pretty decent time and it felt easy," he said.
The Lions' next meet is the Sam Howell Memorial at Princeton University on Saturday.
Weekend sports washed out
Mother Nature's relentless pounding of the College last weekend wreaked havoc on the sports schedule.
The College's home women's lacrosse game, home softball doubleheader and home baseball doubleheader were all postponed due to rain on Saturday. In addition, the golf team's scheduled competition in the McDaniel Invitational was also cancelled.
No rescheduled date has been determined for the lacrosse team's game against St. Mary's College of Maryland.?The baseball doubleheader against Kean University was rescheduled for April 10 in?Ackerman Park with a noon start. The softball team will try again on April 7 to host Kean in a pair of conference games.? First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Armstrong Park.
College to commemorate Student Athlete Day
The College will celebrate National Student Athlete Day on Thursday, April 7. The celebration, observed annually on April 6 since 1987, is America's day to celebrate outstanding student athletes.
The College will recognize the many student athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community. It will also recognize those parents, teachers, coaches and school systems which make it possible to find the balance between academics and athletics.
All of the College's varsity athletes will wear T-shirts commemorating the occasion on Thursday.
Lions sixth in Directors' Cup standings
With the winter sports season concluded, the College now ranks sixth in the race for the United States Sports Academy Director's Cup for Division III. The prize, given to the best overall athletic program, is a Waterford Crystal trophy valued at $35,000.
The College has 443.5 points, while first-place Williams College has 739.75 points. Only the College and Williams have finished in the top four places in the standings in each of the program's nine previous years. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports - nine women's and nine men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.?
